Painting Aluminium – Procedure and Key Considerations
Although aluminium does not rust, it forms a natural oxide layer when it comes into contact with oxygen, which protects the material from weathering. Visually, this layer usually appears silvery-grey and may look lighter or darker depending on dirt or environmental influences.
Especially indoors, on vehicle parts or for decorative projects, this look often does not match personal preferences. Painting aluminium is an ideal way to visually enhance aluminium – both industrially and in private craftsmanship, provided the correct procedure is followed.
Preparation – crucial for a good result
Since paint does not adhere to the natural oxide layer, thorough pretreatment is absolutely necessary. It ensures that the paint coating adheres evenly and remains durable.
1. Sanding
- Removal of the existing oxide layer
- Start with coarse grit (400), continue with fine grit (1000)
- Afterwards, remove sanding dust thoroughly with a brush or microfibre cloth
Important: Anodised aluminium has a particularly hard protective layer that cannot be removed with conventional sandpaper.
➡️ In this case, a specialist company should sandblast the surface, for example.
2. Cleaning
- Degreasing with methylated spirits or a special grease remover
- Removes oils, fingerprints & sanding residues
- Afterwards, do not touch the workpiece with bare hands anymore
The painting process: painting aluminium
After preparation, the actual painting of aluminium follows:
1. Choosing the paint
- Available from specialist retailers: primers, coloured paints & topcoats
- Single-coat paint: can be used without primer, but is less resistant
- 2-component paint: very robust, ideal for boats or vehicles
2. Primer
- Apply an adhesion primer; it ensures better adhesion and durable paint layers
- Allow to dry completely
3. Painting
Several methods are possible:
- Brush/roller: simple, but prone to streaks
- Spray can: even application, easy to handle
- Spray gun: best result – especially for large surfaces
Tip: Apply the paint in a cross-coat pattern and in several thin layers, allowing it to dry well in between.
4. Sealing
- Finish with a clear topcoat – protects against scratches, abrasion and weathering
Alternative: powder coating at METALXACT
Instead of painting, aluminium workpieces can also be powder coated at METALXACT – often more robust and more colour-intensive than a paint finish.

Conclusion
Whether for a boat, vehicle part or decorative project: a paint finish gives aluminium a completely new appearance. With the right preparation, it can also be done easily in private projects – transforming plain grey aluminium pieces into individual eye-catchers.
