Glass holders take on a decisive task in the safe and visually appealing fastening of glass, sheets and other plate materials. Depending on the construction, different glass holders, glass clamps, glass clamp holders, point fixings, sheet metal holders or plate holders are used. The choice of the suitable holder depends, among other things, on the glass thickness, the material, the desired fastening type and the existing substructure.

Which glass fastening is suitable for your project?
Not every glass fastening is suitable for every application. While classic glass clamps securely fix glass panes between two holder halves, point fixings are used primarily when a particularly delicate and almost floating appearance is desired. Sheet metal holders and plate holders, by contrast, enable the secure fastening of a wide variety of plate materials indoors and outdoors.
Various factors play a role in selecting the suitable version. In addition to the glass or plate thickness, the installation situation, the type of substructure, the load and the desired appearance are especially decisive. Equally important is the question of whether the fastening is to take place on a round tube, a square tube, a flat surface or directly on a wall or ceiling.
Depending on the holder model, glass thicknesses from around 1.5 mm to 17.52 mm can be accommodated. The actual clamping is achieved using precisely matched rubber inserts that protect the glass pane, compensate for manufacturing tolerances and enable even force transmission.

Glass holders by connection type: round tube, square tube, wall and ceiling
The connection type is one of the most important selection criteria for glass holders and glass clamps. It determines how the holder rests on the existing substructure and is fastened. For technically clean installation, the rear side of the glass holder must match the shape of the post, tube or substrate.

Glass holders for round tubes
Glass holders for round tubes have a curved connection surface that is adapted to the respective tube diameter. This means the holder rests evenly on the tube and can be mounted in the correct shape. These versions are used particularly often for stainless steel railings, stair railings, balcony railings and balustrade systems with round posts.
Common connection sizes are:
- glass holders for round tube Ø 33.7 mm
- glass holders for round tube Ø 42.4 mm
- glass holders for round tube Ø 48.3 mm
The connection radius must match the existing tube exactly. A glass holder for Ø 42.4 mm should therefore not be mounted on a tube with Ø 48.3 mm. A connection surface that does not fit can lead to uneven contact, visually untidy installation or unfavourable loading of the fastening.
In addition to the tube diameter, the wall thickness of the round tube, the intended fastening hole and the fastener used must also be taken into account. The screw must match the construction, the thread and the load.
Glass holders for square tubes and rectangular tubes
For square tubes and rectangular tubes, glass holders with a straight or flat connection surface are used. These models rest flat on the tube or post and are particularly suitable for modern, straight-lined railing constructions.
Glass holders for square tubes are often combined with tube profiles such as 30 × 30 mm, 40 × 40 mm, 50 × 50 mm or comparable dimensions. What matters is less the external tube size than a sufficiently large, flat contact surface for the respective holder.
Glass holders with a flat connection can also be used on rectangular tubes. It must be ensured that the holder rests completely on the profile surface and does not protrude beyond edges or radii of the tube.
This connection type is suitable, among other things, for:

Glass holders with flat connection
A glass holder with a flat connection is particularly versatile. It can be mounted on suitable flat metal surfaces, posts, profiles or substructures. This version is therefore not only suitable for square tubes, but also for numerous wall, floor and ceiling constructions.
Before installation, it should be checked whether the surface is sufficiently load-bearing, flat and suitable for the intended fastening type. Uneven, unstable or insufficiently dimensioned substrates can impair the safe function of the holder.
Glass holders for wall mounting
Glass holders for wall mounting are often used to fasten glass walls, room dividers, signs, wall claddings and decorative panels. Depending on the construction, classic glass clamps, point fixings or spacers can be used.
Models with a flat rear side are suitable for direct wall fastening. The fastener must be selected to match the wall material. Different plug and screw systems may be required for concrete, solid brick, hollow block, drywall or other substrates.
For heavy glass plates, safety-relevant constructions or large distances between the holders, the fastening must be professionally dimensioned. The load-bearing capacity does not depend on the glass holder alone, but always on the entire structure consisting of holder, screw, plug, substrate and plate.
Glass holders for ceiling mounting
Glass holders and plate holders can, depending on the version, also be used for ceiling mounting. Typical applications are suspended glass elements, signs, room partition systems, decorative plates and certain glass partitions.
Increased requirements apply to planning and execution for overhead mounting. The glass used, the securing, the number of holders and the fastening in the ceiling must be matched to the respective load. Such constructions should always be planned and installed by qualified persons.
Glass holders for floor and base mounting
Depending on the construction, glass and plate holders can also be fastened to floors, bases or horizontal metal profiles. Such solutions can be found, for example, in room dividers, presentation areas, trade fair constructions, signs or technical protective partitions.
Here too, the connection surface must be flat and the holder must be secured against shifting, twisting and pulling out. For glass railings or fall-protection applications, a purely visual selection of the holder is not sufficient. The entire construction must be assessed structurally and in terms of safety.
Selecting glass holders by shape and size
In addition to the connection type, shape, dimensions and clamping surface also influence the effect and possible use of a glass holder. Depending on the project, compact, delicate holders are available as well as larger models with a clearly visible clamping surface.
The shape should match both the substructure and the design concept. Round posts are often combined with semi-round or softly shaped glass clamps, while angular holders harmonise particularly well with square tubes and modern, straight-lined railing systems.
Angular glass holders
Angular glass holders are characterised by clear lines and a modern technical appearance. They are particularly suitable for railings made of square or rectangular tubes, but depending on the connection they can also be used on round tubes or flat surfaces.
Typical sizes include, for example:
- 30 × 30 mm
- 35 × 29 mm
- 40 × 50 mm
- 45 × 45 mm
The respective size influences the clamping surface, the appearance and the possible glass thicknesses. The technical data of the individual article are always decisive.
Rectangular glass holders
Rectangular glass clamp holders offer a distinctive appearance and often a larger visible contact surface. They are often used for larger glass surfaces, strong railing posts or constructions with a clear geometric design.
Thanks to their shape, they can be visually combined particularly well with rectangular tubes, flat steels and angular metal frames.
Semi-round glass holders
Semi-round glass holders combine a straight connection or clamping surface with a rounded outer contour. This makes them appear less angular and allows them to blend harmoniously into classic stainless steel railings and round tube systems.
They are often used for balcony, stair and terrace railings where a softer design language is desired.
Round glass holders and point fixings
Round glass holders and point fixings reduce the visible fastening to a compact circular shape. They are particularly suitable for architecturally restrained solutions, signs, wall glazing, partition walls and decorative plates.
Depending on the design, point fixings can work with a glass hole. The dimension of the hole, the distance to the glass edge and the structure of the holder must already be taken into account during planning.
Compact glass holders for small plates
For smaller signs, thin plates, furniture applications or light partition elements, compact holders may be sufficient. However, the selection must not be based solely on the size of the holder. Material, plate weight, fastening distance and load direction are also decisive.
Larger glass holders for railings and glass infills
Larger glass holders offer a more pronounced clamping surface and are often used for glass infills on railings and metal frames. Depending on their version, they may be intended for higher glass thicknesses or larger plate dimensions.
However, the size of the holder is not in itself proof of its load-bearing capacity. For railings, balustrade glazing or other safety-relevant applications, the manufacturer’s specifications and project-specific requirements must be observed.
Which glass thickness fits which glass holder?
Glass holders and glass clamps must be matched exactly to the existing glass or plate thickness. In many models, the actual adjustment is made using suitable rubber inserts. As a result, the same basic holder body can often be used for different glass thicknesses.
Depending on the model, solutions for glass and plate thicknesses from around 1.5 mm to 17.52 mm are available. The specific suitability results from the respective combination of holder, rubber insert, plate material and application.
Frequently used glass thicknesses
- 6.00 mm: often used for smaller toughened safety glass surfaces and indoor applications
- 6.76 mm: typical structure for thinner laminated safety glass
- 8.00 mm: frequently used toughened safety glass thickness
- 8.76 mm: common laminated safety glass version
- 10.00 mm: stronger toughened safety glass plates
- 10.76 mm: laminated safety glass structure for numerous glass infills
- 12.00 mm: stronger glass plates for suitable holder models
- 12.76 mm: laminated safety glass version for appropriately approved holders
- 13.52 mm to 17.52 mm: stronger laminated structures for suitable models
In addition, there are inserts for thin sheets, plastic plates and other plate materials. Depending on the holder, these can start at around 1.5 mm.
Why the correct rubber insert is decisive
The rubber insert prevents direct contact between glass and metal. At the same time, it protects the surface and contributes to even clamping. An incorrect insert can cause the pane not to be held sufficiently or to be subjected to impermissible stress when the screws are tightened.
An insert that is too thin may not generate enough clamping effect. An insert that is too thick can prevent the holder from closing properly. The glass thickness must therefore not be compensated for by excessively tightening the screws.
Rubber inserts for toughened safety glass and laminated safety glass
Different nominal thicknesses can occur with toughened safety glass and laminated safety glass. Especially with laminated safety glass, the actual total thickness of the glass structure must be taken into account. For example, a pane with 8.76 mm is not equivalent to an 8.00 mm pane.
Therefore, always choose the insert intended for the specific total thickness of the pane. The product information for the holder and insert is binding in this respect.
Glass holders for sheet metal and plastic plates
Not every glass holder is intended exclusively for glass. Depending on the model, metal sheets, acrylic glass, polycarbonate, composite panels or signs can also be fastened. It must be checked whether the surface, material strength and plate thickness are suitable for clamp mounting.
With sensitive or soft materials, different pressure conditions can occur than with glass. A sufficiently large contact surface and a material-compatible insert are therefore particularly important.
Glass holders made of V2A stainless steel, V4A stainless steel and zinc die casting
The material of a glass holder influences both the appearance and its suitability for different environmental conditions. In addition to the desired surface, moisture, weathering, cleaning agents, industrial influences and later stress in particular play a role.

Glass holders made of V2A stainless steel
V2A stainless steel is often used for glass holders in railing construction, interior construction and ordinarily exposed outdoor areas. The material impresses with a modern appearance, good corrosion resistance and versatile processing options.
Many glass holders made of V2A are offered with a brushed surface. This creates an even, matt appearance and can be visually combined well with stainless steel tubes, handrails, railing posts and other fittings.
Typical applications for V2A glass holders are:
- stair and balcony railings
- terrace railings in ordinary environments
- interior glass partitions
- room dividers and shopfitting constructions
- shower partitions with suitable care

V2A stainless steel is also not permanently protected against every form of corrosion under all conditions. Salt exposure, aggressive cleaning agents, foreign rust or industrial atmospheres can affect the surface. Material-appropriate care and cleaning therefore remain important.
Glass holders made of V4A stainless steel
V4A stainless steel is preferably used when increased resistance to certain corrosive influences is required compared with V2A. The material contains additional alloying components and is therefore often better suited for more demanding outdoor and wet areas.
V4A glass holders may be considered, among other things, under the following environmental conditions:
- increased weather exposure
- coastal environments
- chloride-containing environments
- certain swimming pool and wellness areas
- certain industrial applications
- regularly damp or more heavily stressed outdoor areas
However, the designation V4A alone does not replace a professional material assessment. In particularly aggressive environmental conditions, it must be checked whether the specific alloy, surface and construction are suitable for the intended use.
V2A or V4A – which material is the right one?
For many standard applications indoors and in ordinary outdoor areas, V2A stainless steel is a proven choice. With higher moisture, salt or chemical exposure, V4A stainless steel can be the technically more suitable solution.
For material selection, the following questions in particular should be answered:
- Will the glass holder be used indoors or outdoors?
- Is the construction exposed directly to the weather?
- Is there contact with salt, chlorides or aggressive cleaning agents?
- How often is the surface cleaned and maintained?
- Are there industrial or chemical loads?
- Should the holder also be powder-coated?
Glass holders made of zinc die casting
Zinc die casting enables the economical production of dimensionally accurate glass holders and glass clamps. The material is particularly suitable for standardised series products and can be provided with different decorative or protective surfaces.
Holders made of zinc die casting are used, for example, in interior construction, furniture construction, sign construction or for lighter glass and plate fastenings. The specific suitability depends on the respective model, the surface treatment and the intended load.
In outdoor areas, particular attention should be paid to the coating, the environmental conditions and the manufacturer’s specifications. Damage to the surface can impair resistance.
Brushed, polished and coated surfaces
In addition to the material, the surface shapes the appearance of a glass holder. It influences how the holder integrates into a railing, façade or interior construction.
Brushed stainless steel surfaces
Brushed stainless steel has a fine, directional structure. This surface appears technical, modern and high-quality. It harmonises particularly well with brushed stainless steel tubes, posts, handrails and railing components.
During cleaning and aftercare, work should always be carried out in the brushing direction. Circular movements or coarse abrasives can alter the even brushed appearance.
Polished surfaces
Polished surfaces appear smoother and glossier than brushed variants. They are often used for decorative applications, representative interiors or constructions with a particularly refined appearance.
Fingerprints, water marks and minor scratches can be more visible on high-gloss surfaces. Regular cleaning with suitable care products is therefore recommended.
Powder-coated surfaces
Powder-coated glass holders allow colour matching to windows, doors, railing posts, façade elements, metal profiles and existing architectural concepts. At the same time, a robust, closed surface is created.
Black, anthracite-coloured and white glass holders are particularly in demand. In addition, numerous further colour shades, gloss levels and textures can be realised depending on the project.
Powder-coated glass holders in RAL 9005, RAL 7016, RAL 9016 and more than 1,500 special colours
With powder-coated glass holders, glass and plate fastenings can be specifically matched to the colour concept of the entire construction. Instead of visible fittings in classic stainless steel appearance, holders, posts, tubes and other components can be made in a uniform colour shade.

Glass holders in black RAL 9005
Jet black RAL 9005 is one of the most popular colours for modern railing and glass fastenings. Black glass holders create a strong contrast to transparent glass and fit particularly well with black railing posts, windows, doors and metal frames.

Glass holders in anthracite grey RAL 7016
Anthracite grey RAL 7016 is often used for windows, front doors, façade elements, carports and railings. Glass holders in this colour shade enable a harmonious overall appearance when the adjacent components are also finished in anthracite.
The colour appears somewhat softer than jet black and can be combined well with glass, concrete, natural stone, wood and powder-coated aluminium or steel profiles.
Glass holders in traffic white RAL 9016
Traffic white RAL 9016 is suitable for bright, discreet and architecturally calm design concepts. White glass holders are used, among other things, in interior construction, shopfitting, bright façades and in combination with white window and door systems.
In combination with transparent or satin-finished glass, a particularly light and restrained appearance is created.
More than 1,500 additional RAL, special and effect colours
In addition to the frequently requested standard colours, more than 1,500 additional RAL, special, textured and effect colours are possible depending on the project. This allows glass holders to be colour-matched exactly to individual constructions, corporate colours or architectural requirements.
Depending on the colour system and coating structure, the following variants, among others, can be realised:

The actual availability depends on the component, the base material, the quantity and the desired coating system. Colour shade, texture and gloss level should therefore already be defined during project planning.

Depending on the project, tubes, profiles, sheets, railing posts, handrail brackets and other accessories, for example, can be powder-coated in the same colour.

What should be considered with powder-coated holders?
The coating can be damaged by hard tools, incorrect installation or direct metal contact. Use suitable tools during installation and avoid scratches on visible surfaces.
Screws should be tightened evenly and in a controlled manner. Damaged coating areas can impair corrosion protection depending on the base material and place of use.
For outdoor applications, the coating must be suitable for the respective environment. In particularly aggressive, coastal or industrial areas, special pretreatments or coating systems may be required.
Cleaning and maintaining glass holders correctly
Regular cleaning supports the long-term preservation of surface and appearance. Dust, metal abrasion, dirt, salt and cleaning agent residues should not remain permanently on the holders.
Care of stainless steel glass holders
Soft cloths, clear water and suitable stainless steel cleaners are suitable for stainless steel surfaces. On brushed surfaces, cleaning should always be carried out in the brushing direction.
Avoid chloride-containing cleaners, aggressive acids, steel brushes and cleaning tools made of ordinary steel. They can attack the surface or cause foreign rust.
Care of powder-coated glass holders
Powder-coated surfaces should be cleaned with a soft cloth or sponge and a mild, neutral cleaning agent. Abrasive agents, aggressive solvents and hard brushes can damage the coating.
For outdoor installations, regular visual inspection is recommended. Damage, loose screws and soiling should be detected early and remedied professionally.
Point fixings for glass, signs and architectural plate fastenings
Point fixings enable a particularly reduced and visually restrained fastening of glass plates, signs, façade elements and other plate materials. Unlike classic glass clamps, the material is not held over a larger lateral clamping surface. Instead, fastening takes place at individual points using individual holders.
Depending on the design, point fixings are guided through a prepared hole in the glass or plate surface or used as spacers between substrate and plate. This creates a modern, partly floating appearance.

How does a point fixing work?
A typical point fixing consists of several coordinated components. Depending on the version, these include a base body, a spacer, a threaded element, protective or intermediate layers and a visible cover disc.
The plate is held between the intended components or connected to the point fixing via a suitable hole. Protective layers prevent direct contact between glass and metal. At the same time, they support even load distribution.
Point fixings for drilled glass
Many point fixings require an exactly positioned glass hole. This must already be taken into account when ordering or manufacturing the glass pane. Subsequent drilling is generally not possible with toughened safety glass.
The following dimensions are particularly relevant for planning:
- diameter of the glass hole
- distance of the hole to the glass edge
- position of the holes relative to each other
- total thickness of the glass
- diameter of the visible holder
- distance between glass and substrate
Hole diameters and edge distances must not be selected freely based on visual aspects. They must match the point fixing, the glass structure and the structural load.
Point fixings as spacers
For signs, information boards and decorative plates, point fixings are often used as spacers at the same time. The plate does not rest directly against the wall, but is fastened in front of the substrate with a defined distance.
This fastening type is suitable, among other things, for:
- company signs and practice signs
- door and information signs
- glass pictures and photo plates
- acrylic glass and plastic signs
- information and orientation systems
- decorative wall claddings
- displays and presentation areas
Point fixings for wall mounting
For wall mounting, point fixings are fastened to the substrate with suitable screws and wall plugs. The fastening system must be matched to the wall type and the weight of the plate.
Concrete, masonry, drywall and wooden substructures require different fastening solutions. Especially with heavy glass plates, the load-bearing capacity must not be assessed solely on the basis of the point fixing.
Point fixings for railing and glass constructions
In railing and balustrade systems, point fixings can enable very delicate glass fastening. The pane is fixed at individual points to posts, frames or load-bearing substructures.
For fall-protection glazing, increased requirements apply to glass structure, holder spacing, fasteners and substructure. Such systems must be planned and checked on a project-specific basis.
Materials and colours for point fixings
Depending on the version, point fixings are available in V2A stainless steel, V4A stainless steel, zinc die casting or other suitable materials. In addition to brushed and polished surfaces, selected models are also available powder-coated.
For colour-coordinated constructions, black RAL 9005, anthracite grey RAL 7016 and traffic white RAL 9016, among others, can be selected. In addition, more than 1,500 additional RAL, special, textured and effect colours are possible depending on the project.
Sheet metal holders for metal infills, claddings and technical constructions
Sheet metal holders are used to fasten thin metal plates and other suitable flat materials. They are used wherever sheets need to be securely held on posts, frames, tubes, walls or other substructures.
Visually, many sheet metal holders resemble classic glass clamps. However, the inserts and the clamping gap are matched to lower material thicknesses. This means, for example, aluminium sheets, stainless steel sheets, steel sheets, composite panels or signs can be fastened.

Sheet metal holders for railing infills
In addition to glass, railings can also be filled with metal sheets, perforated sheets or other plate materials. Sheet metal holders enable mechanical fastening of these infills to the railing posts.
Depending on the design, opaque, perforated, textured or powder-coated sheets can be used. This allows privacy screening, fall protection and design to be combined.
Sheet metal holders for round tubes and square tubes
As with glass holders, the connection shape of sheet metal holders must also match the substructure. For round tubes, variants with the corresponding radius are used. For square tubes, rectangular tubes and flat surfaces, models with a flat rear side are suitable.
Common round tube connections are, for example, Ø 33.7 mm, Ø 42.4 mm and Ø 48.3 mm. With flat connections, the contact surface must be sufficiently large and flat.
Observe sheet thickness and clamping gap
The permissible clamping range of a sheet metal holder must match the actual material thickness. Thin sheets must not be fastened merely by tightening the screws particularly strongly.
Depending on the model, inserts or intermediate layers may be required. They protect the surface, compensate for the clamping gap and reduce direct contact between holder and sheet.
Sheet metal holders for powder-coated plates
With powder-coated sheets, the surface must be protected from scratches and pressure marks during installation. Suitable inserts prevent metal from resting directly on the coating.
Holder and sheet can be colour-coordinated. This allows complete railing infills, for example, to be made in RAL 9005, RAL 7016, RAL 9016 or an individual special colour.
Plate holders for glass, plastic, metal and composite panels
Plate holders form the most versatile group within clamping and fastening elements. Depending on the respective version, they can be used for glass, sheets, acrylic glass, polycarbonate, aluminium composite panels, laminate panels and other suitable flat materials.
It is decisive that the holder matches the material, the plate thickness, the weight and the intended installation situation. Not every plate holder is automatically suitable for every type of plate.
Plate holders for plastic plates
