Material & standards of our aluminium rectangular tubes

  • Alloy/material: AlMgSi0.5
  • Material number: EN AW-6060
  • Delivery condition: T66 (solution-annealed and artificially aged)
  • Manufacturing process: pressed
  • Standards: EN 573-3, EN 755 (-1 / -2 / -8)

An aluminium rectangular tube is a hollow aluminium profile with a rectangular cross-section (e.g. 40 × 20 mm). Thanks to its closed shape, it is very stable and torsion-resistant, yet remains pleasantly light. It is precisely this combination that makes aluminium rectangular tubes a popular solution for constructions in the private and industrial sectors.

Differentiation from square tubing

A square tube is also a rectangular profile - only with the same side lengths (e.g. 25 × 25 mm). Rectangular tubes (A ≠ B) are often chosen when stability needs to be particularly high, especially in one direction, such as for frames and struts

Why METALXACT?

✅ Tested quality in accordance with international standards

✅ Wide variety of surfaces - from raw/bright to coated

✅ Maximum flexibility for individual cuts and customised solutions

Typical applications for aluminium rectangular tubes

Aluminium rectangular tubes are suitable for many practical projects - for example for
  • Balcony and stair railings, handrails and substructures
  • Frames and stands (tables, chairs, shelves, furniture construction)
  • Mechanical engineering and manufacturing (brackets, protective frames, fixtures)
  • Automotive and general lightweight construction applications
  • DIY and modelling: wherever a stable, easy-to-machine profile is required

When is EN AW-6060 ideal?

If you are looking for a profile that is corrosion-resistant, easy to machine (sawing/drilling/milling) and at the same time offers a very good basis for subsequent surface finishing. The material can be anodised very well and is ideal for powder coating.

Aluminium rectangular tubes with powder coating

If you select the powder coating option in the configurator when ordering, you will receive an even, robust protective coating in a RAL colour of your choice: ideal for demanding applications where appearance and durability are paramount.

Cutting to size & availability

You will find a large selection of widths and dimensions in our shop - and thanks to precise cutting to length, you can quickly obtain the profile that suits your project.
  • smallest dimension: 20 × 10 × 2 mm
  • largest dimension: 200 × 100 × 5 mm
If you require a dimension that is outside our stock range, we look forward to receiving your enquiry

Product features at a glance

  • Lightweight & yet robust thanks to low density
  • Very good corrosion resistance for long-lasting applications
  • High-quality, smooth surface with precise length tolerances
  • Top for further processing: good machinability, weldable and solderable
  • Perfect for finishing: very easy to anodise and ideal for powder coating
  • Suitable for the food industry (in accordance with EN 602)

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about aluminium rectangular tubes

What are the main advantages of aluminium over steel?

Aluminium is significantly lighter, corrosion-resistant and often easier to machine. Steel is usually stiffer (with the same geometry) and often cheaper.

Are aluminium profiles suitable for outdoor use?

As a rule, yes, because aluminium does not "rust through" like steel. In aggressive environments (salt/sea), additional surface protection (e.g. powder coating) is advisable.

Anodising or powder coating - which is better?

  • Anodising: very elegant look, more scratch-resistant than raw, metallic finish
  • Powder coating: huge range of colours, very good protection, "painted" look

Powder coating is often the first choice for colour + weather protection

What is the difference between press-finished, anodised and powder-coated?

  • Pressed bright: Untreated aluminium with a raw, matt surface. Inexpensive, easy to process, but only limited corrosion protection.
  • Anodised: Aluminium with a protective oxide layer. Uniform appearance, high corrosion and abrasion protection, ideal for visible components.
  • Powder-coated: Colour-coated aluminium with very high resistance. Ideal for outdoor areas and individual colour design

Which wall thickness should I choose?

As a rule of thumb: the higher the load, the thicker the wall. For load-bearing constructions, 2-3 mm+ often makes sense. For light frames/panelling, 1-2 mm is often sufficient. (If it is relevant to safety: have a structural analysis carried out)

Can aluminium rectangular tubes be drilled, sawn and milled?

Yes, aluminium is easy to cut. Best: Saw blade for non-ferrous metals, clean clamping, deburring - and use cutting oil when drilling if necessary.

What do I have to watch out for when in contact with other metals?

Keyword contact corrosion: Aluminium can react in conjunction with e.g. stainless steel and moisture. Remedy: Separating layers, suitable screws, coatings, dry construction.
